Marine Fish Food

If you worry about your diet, shouldn’t you do the same for your pets? The best food for marine fish is the one that suits you based on its characteristics.
In addition, like you, the food for our aquarium fish must be proportional, depending on the number of fish and their size, we must add more or less, it is not convenient that the food ends up at the bottom of the aquarium, altering the water parameters.
The best food for marine fish
What do marine fish eat?
Not all saltwater fish eat the same, each one has different eating habits, thus we have vegetarian, carnivorous, scavenger, filter feeder and omnivore fish.
Obviously, before starting with our marine aquarium we must know the nutritional needs of the fish that we would like to have, as well as the compatibility or not between different species.
Vegetarian or herbivorous fish species
In their natural state they spend much of their time grazing among the algae, which are their main food source. They spend most of the day eating.
Among the best known species we have the surgeons , blennidae, siganus, marine angelfish …
Some may supplement their diet with animal protein.
Most commercial brands usually contain algae and other vegetables , and they will be enough to provide them with the nutrients they need.
The ideal is proportional feeding twice a day, every day in small doses, usually what they can eat in a few minutes (2 or 3).
A good idea is to supplement their diet, provide fresh food two or three times a week.
Some of the vegetables you can use are:
- Lettuce
- Spinach
- Peas (cooked)
- Lentils (cooked)
- Strawberries
- Kiwi
- Carrots
We must try and see which foods our fish like best, and which ones they tolerate better. From these foods, different “porridges” can be prepared with binders such as neutral gelatin or agar-agar, which is a preparation based on algae.
Carnivorous marine fish
Some carnivorous marine fish are serranids, grammatids, perciformes, gobies …
They should be fed once a day, the amount they are able to eat voraciously for a few minutes.
As with everything related to fish food, there are commercial preparations that largely avoid having to make porridges or preparations . However, there are always those who prefer to make their own recipes.
Some of the foods that we can introduce in the feeding of carnivorous marine fish are:
- Mussel
- Tuna
- Prawn
- Sardine
- Mackerel
- Clams
- Squid
- Whiting
- Worms and insects (live if possible)
- Small crustaceans
All these foods are easy to find in the fishmonger, we must always be careful that they are not treated … we cannot offer our fish tuna in oil, no matter how much we like it.
Another tip with carnivorous fish: we must be careful with the choice of carnivore and predator species for our aquarium, since they can see other aquarium species as part of their food.
